IT’S MY BIRTHDAY: 2015 birthday haul

HI GUYS! It’s my birthday today and I am officially 24 (not 25, as I kept thinking the last few weeks!) and because I’m a big believer in the #treatyoself way of life, I did treat myself to a very generous birthday haul this year, largely possible due to the Sephora VIB sale!

IMG_0301

Isn’t it just so beautiful? Doesn’t it just make you so happy? It makes me happy, that’s for sure! I really went all out but with that 20% off at Sephora, it was really hard not to. Thankfully, I stayed well within my budget, and I’m definitely going to need to go on a no buy soon to remedy all this stuff that I got. But enough yapping, let’s start talking about what I got!

IMG_0283

Let’s start with some face stuff here, shall we? First, I got the Urban Decay De-slick Makeup Setting Spray. This was definitely not on my original wish list, but when I saw it at the checkout line at Sephora and saw the words “oil control,” I just couldn’t resist! I have a major case of oily skin, so I’m excited to see how this’ll help me out.

Following that trend, I picked up the L’oreal Infallible Pro-Matte foundation, which I’ve heard a lot of good things about! It’s hard to tell if it’ll be the right color for me because Ulta doesn’t have testers and this foundation is sealed, but we’ll see how I do. I also picked up a mini of the Benefit the Porefessional primer, because I realized the only primer I own is a Maybelline one and I wanted to try out something high end instead!

Lastly, I got the Real Techniques setting brush, which I read about on the lovely Claire’s blog, Clarina Beauty. Since Ulta had a sale for buy one, get one 50% off, I picked up this mini Ecotools brush set, mainly for the powder brush, so I can carry it in my makeup bag without it getting all bent out of shape. I probably won’t be using the other two brushes at all, but they’re cute!

IMG_0287

Next, let’s talk about these two babies. Naked 1 and 2 are finally mine and I can say I own all three Naked palettes (minus Smoky and Basics and all those other ones, of course). I was debating which one of these I wanted more but I honestly could not figure it out, so I ended up getting both! Of course, I’m forbidden from buying any more palettes for a looooong time now.

IMG_0288

And lastly, I got lots and lots of lip goodies! The things that were actually on my wish list were the two NARS Audacious lipsticks and two Too Faced Melted lipsticks, but I couldn’t resist getting a few more things.

IMG_0290

First, we got these beauties from NARS: Charlotte, Vera, and Funny Face from left to right. I’d been eyeing Charlotte and Vera for a while now, and Funny Face is a color my ex owned that I always wish I’d “accidentally” kept (and actually almost did once) so I figured I might as well go for it.

IMG_0293

From top to bottom: Charlotte, Vera, and Funny Face.

IMG_0295

Then we have the Too Faced Melted Lipsticks in the colors Melted Chihuahua and Melted Jelly Donut. I learned about these from my ex as well and boy am I glad I did. I was originally going to get Melted Fig, but I deemed it too close to some other lipsticks I have and went with Melted Jelly Donut instead, and I’m glad I did! I’ll probably get Melted Fig sooner or later…

IMG_0296

Top: Melted Jelly Donut. Bottom: Melted Chihuahua.

IMG_0297

And last in this humongous haul, we have my first ever ABH lipstick in the color Blush, as well as the KVD duo in Lolita I and Lolita II. I walked into Macy’s and realized they actually had the ABH lipsticks and while they didn’t have a lot of the colors in stock, I was in love! I couldn’t help but get my hands on this and it’s a beautiful color that I don’t anything quite like it. I was surprised by how much I liked Lolita II because I’d been expecting to favor Lolita, but I’m so happy I got both!

That wraps things up for today’s haul! It’s so much stuff but I’m so excited to try it out and get good use out of it all. Thanks for reading! Let me know what you think.

Fall favorites collab with Hanna: the lipstick edition!

Hi beauties! For today’s post, we have the long-belated collab that Hanna from Lipstick Lovely and I have been working on and waiting to post for ages now! We couldn’t coordinate our schedules and we kept missing each other (when I went to Canada, when she went on vacation, etc) but we finally managed to find a week that worked for both of us! You can check out her post here.

For my post, I’m doing my top five fall lipsticks. I was originally going to do more than these five, but after a lot of careful thought, I eliminated some of the other contenders and ended with just these five. I did think to include some of the Wet n Wild lipsticks I talked about in my last post but since I was taking the pictures for those at the same time, I totally forgot to include them! I’ll add in a little mention at the end for the ones I would’ve chosen.

IMG_0002

Here we have the five I chose for my favorite fall lipsticks! In no particular order, they are Too Faced Melted Lipstick in Melted Berry, OFRA Long Lasting Liquid Lipstick in Santa Ana, Sephora Lip Stains in Blackberry Sorbet and Marvelous Mauve, and ColourPop Lippie Stix in Frida.

IMG_0004

And some swatches! From left to right, these are Frida, Marvelous Mauve, Santa Ana, Blackberry Sorbet and Melted Berry. I apologize for the weird lighting, I did my best to tinker with it but this was the best I could get it to! If anyone wants better swatches, comment with your twitter and I can post something later!

I tried my hardest to pick more than just berry red shades, even though that’s usually what I want to go for in the fall. I just love a deep berry color on the lips this time of year! I’m not really one to only wear lipstick seasonally but that’s just what I’ve been in the mood for lately.

Melted Berry is that exact deep red berry shade that is absolutely beautiful, it’s dark but not overpowering and still bright enough to pass for a red lip. Santa Ana is a lighter red with a little pink in it (it’s a beautiful color and so hard to describe!!) and Blackberry Sorbet is a dark, totally vampy and totally gorgeous shade. Lastly, Marvelous Mauve is… exactly what it sounds like, actually! It’s a beautiful dark mauve color (it looks darker on the lips than on the tube sometimes) and Frida is a beautiful slightly peachy nude that is still deep enough for fall.

I obviously picked all of these because I love them, but if I had to rank them in my preferred order, it would go: Melted Berry, Santa Ana, Marvelous Mauve, Frida, and Blackberry Sorbet. This was really hard to pick though! There were at least five contenders that were left out of the race… or whatever this is.

I hope you guys enjoyed this post! Don’t forget to check out Hanna’s fall favorites post to see what she wrote about! What are your favorite fall lip products?

Shop My Stash: Wet n Wild MegaLast Lip Color

Hello friends! Welcome to a new weekly series in my blog called “Shop My Stash”! I’ve been wanting to do this for a while because while I always talk about new makeup I’ve gotten, I don’t often talk about the oldies but goodies I have in my makeup collection! Before anyone gets too excited, no, nothing here will be for sale. Sorry to disappoint!

IMG_0005

Today I’ve got for you the Wet n Wild MegaLast lip color. You’ve probably heard of these because there are few beauty bloggers out there who don’t rave about them! They’re amazing quality, very comfortable to wear and the best part is, they’re only two dollars a pop! How could you say no?

I’ve had a handful of these but recently I’ve been inspired by KathleenLights’ videos to get some more colors to add to my collection, so I thought these would be a good first installment to my series. Let’s move on to the colors themselves, shall we?

IMG_0009

From left to right, we’ve got:

  • Wine Room is a dusty pink with a little mauve in it, but definitely more pink than mauve.
  • Sugar Plum Fairy is a dark berry purple that is a very good dupe for MAC’s Rebel.
  • Smokin’ Hot Pink is not as hot or as bright as I imagined it! It’s more of a darker pink and a great day shade.
  • Don’t Blink Pink is a much brighter, cool-toned pink but still not quite neon.
  • Stoplight Red is a classic cool-toned red that reminds me of MAC’s Ruby Woo.
  • Pinkerbell is a very bright, very cool pink.
  • Cherry Picking is a dark berry pink, a perfect fall color.
  • Rose-bud is very similar to Wine Room but a little lighter. It’s a pink-ish nude (or nude-ish pink).
  • Red Velvet is a bright, eye-catching red that reminds me of Kat Von D’s Underage Red.
  • Lastly, Mauve Outta Here is exactly what it says: mauve.

IMG_0010

From top to bottom: Mauve Outta Here, Red Velvet, Rose-bud, Cherry Picking, Pinkerbell, Stoplight Red, Don’t Blink Pink, Smokin’ Hot Pink, Sugar Plum Fairy, and Wine Room. The quality on these is amazing. They’re creamy, not very drying (but still matte), and they last a pretty long time. I don’t think I could love these more than I do, to be completely honest.

That being said, they do have a few downsides (but I still love them). First is the packaging. Like I said earlier, they only cost two dollars each, which is a great price for the quality, but as far as the packaging goes, you definitely get what you paid for. The packaging itself looks cheap, gets dirty really easily as the tube doesn’t roll down all the way, and just doesn’t look pretty.

The other downside is that since the tip is round, it can make precise application a little trickier. If you’re a pro at applying lipstick, you probably won’t struggle too much, but if putting lipstick on and keeping it within the lines (regardless of where you drew them!) is something you can’t do, then this lipstick will take some practice to apply.

That being said, these are small prices to pay for the quality of the product itself and how little you pay, right?

Do you guys own any of these? Do you love them? Hate them? Love to hate them? Let me know in the comments!

Lipstick 101: a lesson for lipstick newbies

Hello my loves! The other day, my friend Maggie texted me asking if I could write a post on here talking about the differences between lipstick finishes, lip liners, lip crayons, liquid and tube lipstick, etc. Since I do consider myself to be fairly well-versed in the world of lipstick, how could I say no?

Let’s start with talking about the two most popular forms of lipstick: liquid vs. tube lipstick. Tube lipstick is what you traditionally think of as lipstick, a little tube with a cap that you turn to get the product and apply straight to your lips. Pictured here is a Sephora Rouge Cream lipstick in the color Hot Tango. I bought this in 2013 and it was one of my first ever Sephora purchases and I’ve loved it since! It’s a perfect red with a little pink in it and what I would describe as a satin finish — but we’ll get to that later.

IMG_0008

Next we have a liquid lipstick. This form of lipstick has been all the rage in the makeup world lately, and pictured here is one of the most popular liquid lipsticks: Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in the color Underage Red. With a doe foot applicator, liquid lipstick looks like what we might remember as lipgloss from our younger years, but in reality is quite different. This one in particular is a bright cool-toned red that dries to matte and is about as long-wearing as they come.

IMG_0009

What else is there besides liquid and classic lipstick? Oh, so much more. Here we have a lip crayon from J.Cat Beauty in the color Red Rose. Lip crayons can be worn on their own or under lipstick, much like their slimmer cousin the lip liner. This particular color is a great red with cool undertones that would go great with either lipstick we’ve talked about so far.

Up next we’ve got the slimmer cousin of the lip crayon, the lip liner. This one is a City Color City Chic lip liner in the color Ruby. Lip liners are typically worn under lipstick to define the lip shape as well as extend the longevity of the lipstick you wear. They’re great partners to go with your favorite lipstick, because they can really enhance and even slightly alter the lipstick, and you can mix and match lipstick and lip liners and come up with some great combinations!

So that’s what we’ve got for different type of lip products. I didn’t include lip gloss or lip stains because those are fairly self-explanatory (and also I don’t own many). Let’s move on to finishes, then!

IMG_0006

First, let’s start with one of the most popular (and my favorite): matte finishes. For a lipstick to be matte means that once applied and dry, there’s no shine or glossiness to the lipstick. It’s a great classic look and super pigmented, but it doesn’t come without its downside. Mainly, the dryness. For your lips to be as pigmented and matte as they are with matte lipstick on, they tend to be extremely drying. Therefore, it’s really important to moisturize and prime your lips before applying matte lipstick.

IMG_0010

Top to bottom: Lumière (matte), Fetch (satin), Go Fish (hyper glossy).

These are three examples of matte lipstick: first, we have Kat Von D’s Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Underage Red (pictured above), which may seem familiar since we just discussed it above in the types of lipsticks section of this post. Next, we have MAC Ruby Woo (pictured below), which is possibly the most popular red lipstick (don’t quote me on this) but also the most drying as it has a Retro Matte finish (thanks MAC). Last, we have the lovely Lumière lippie stix from ColourPop.

Here we have a satin finish from ColourPop in the color Fetch. Satin finishes are great, because they’re just as pigmented as matte, but not nearly as drying, and definitely my second favorite after matte. They’re very moisturizing, very pigmented, very creamy, and very easy to wear. As you can see, they have a slight bit more shine to them than matte finishes.

Lastly, we have glossy/hyper glossy. This one is ColourPop in Go Fish and is much, much shinier than the one before. Glossy finishes are shinier, sometimes not as pigmented as matte or satin, and much stickier depending on the formula. When you wear glossy finishes, it’s almost as if you’re wearing lipgloss on top to give your lips that shine. They’re my least favorite (and I actually had to go get this particular one out of my sister’s bathroom because I got rid of all my glossy finishes).

Top to bottom: Ruby Woo (retro matte), Velvet Teddy (matte), Impassioned (amplified).

Top to bottom: Ruby Woo (retro matte), Velvet Teddy (matte), Impassioned (amplified).

As an addendum, I thought I would talk really quickly about MAC finishes. We already talked about different matte finishes and here we have two of them in MAC form: Ruby Woo and Velvet Teddy. As a retro matte, Ruby Woo is much more drying and more obviously matte than Velvet Teddy, but they’re both still fairly matte. Then we have Impassioned, which is an amplified finish. What that means it that it’s very pigmented but also moisturizing with a little bit of shine to it. These are the only kind of MAC finishes I have, but let’s run through the rest really quick.

Satin finishes are, much like we mentioned above, quite pigmented but not drying like matte finishes with a little bit of shine to them. Amplified creme are long-lasting, creamy, pigmented and glossier. Cremesheen are creamier, not quite as long-lasting, but very comfortable on the lips. Cremesheen pearl are very similar to cremesheen, but with a frostier finish. Lustre are sheer coverage, not long-lasting, and glossy. Frost are very shimmery, fairly pigmented but not the most long-lasting. And lastly, glaze finishes are sheer, with quite a bit of gloss, and probably the least long-lasting of all MAC finishes.

Wow, this got really long! I hope this was a good guide to everyone who is overwhelmed by all things lipstick. Let me know if you think I missed anything or if you have any questions in the comments!

Guest blogger week, day 1: Hanna’s top drugstore lip products for fall

Hi there!

My name is Hanna.  I am a coffee addict with a love for all things beauty.  I blog about everything from makeup and fashion to DIYs in my little corner of the internet, Lipstick Lovely.  I am so excited to be writing for Valentina’s amazing blog today and I hope you enjoy!

Now that fall is right around the corner, I’ve been transitioning out of summer lip colors and getting extremely excited about autumn shades. I love scavenging through the drugstore to discover fall makeup and I have found quite a few treasures to prepare my lips for my favorite season of deep berry lips!

unnamed (4)

1. Essence Lip Liner in Honey Berry

Honey Berry is a beautiful purple/pink shade.  Although it’s bright, it is not overpowering.  It makes my teeth look whiter, which is always a plus!  Essence lip liners do not get raved about enough in my opinion.  They are long lasting and the formula is an amazing quality for the price!

unnamed

2. Essence Lip Liner in Soft Berry

Soft Berry has a hint of grey/brown to it that I love!  It’s perfect for that 90’s look that is very popular this fall.  This is a wearable color that makes me excited about the upcoming season of falling leaves and pumpkin spice lattes.

unnamed (1)

3. Rimmel Kate Moss Lipstick in Plum 030

This lipstick is a beautiful plum shade (as the name would suggest).  It is moisturizing and long-lasting.  I like to dap just a little bit of this product onto my lips for a more natural, everyday color since it is quite bright.  If you are not afraid of colorful lips, this lipstick is definitely for you.

unnamed (2)

4. Revlon Moisture Stain in Parisian Passion

This lip stain is one of my favorite lip products at the moment and I have a feeling that it will continue to be in my top picks for quite some time!  This stain is the most beautiful fall berry shade!  I love how versatile this product is since you have the option to make your lips super shiny or dab off the gloss for the natural, but beautiful stain that it leaves behind.  This stain can be used for everything from everyday looks to a night out depending on how much you apply!

unnamed (3)

5. Rimmel Provocalips in Kiss Fatal

This longwearing liquid lipstick is amazing for a day when you really want your lip color to stay put!  One end of the tube contains the lipstick itself and the other contains the gloss to put over the top so that your lips don’t dry out!   The product smells great, but not overpowering as some scented lipsticks can.  It doesn’t accentuate that lines in my lips as a lot of liquid lipsticks do since this formula dries with a bit of shine and the gloss moisturizes which prevents creasing.

unnamed (5)

6. Maybelline Color Whisper in A Plum Prospect 100

Maybelline’s Color Whispers give a beautiful sheer wash of color for an everyday look.  I love wearing this color during the fall when I just want to swipe on some lipstick and go.  It’s buildable and is even gorgeous when lightly dabbed and blended on the lips.  The formulation is gel-like and very moisturizing!

unnamed (6)

I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing some of my fall lip favorites and that this has been helpful in showing you some affordable lip options for the upcoming season. I’m curious to know some of your amazing drugstore lip finds for fall! A big thank you to Valentina for having me as a guest on her wonderful blog!

XO,

Hanna

My perfect and precious little MAC collection

I’m ashamed to admit it, but I haven’t always been a huge fan of MAC lipstick, even though I’ve been obsessed with lipstick for at least a few years now. It wasn’t until my ex-girlfriend, who was a huge huge fan of MAC lipstick, introduced me to it the first time I stayed at their apartment that I was introduced to the wonder of MAC lipstick, and ever since, I’ve been obsessed. Throughout our relationship, they gave me a MAC lipstick for special occasions (Christmas, my birthday, and Valentine’s Day) and thus started what I’d like to think of as an obsession now.

All my beautiful babies!

All my beautiful babies!

Three of these I got from my ex, one of them I stole (oops) and the other two I bought. I have Velvet Teddy, Ruby Woo, Impassioned, Full Fuchsia, Lady Danger, and Heroine!

I actually used my camera for once and the pictures are so much better!

Left to right: Velvet Teddy, Full Fuchsia, Impassioned, Lady Danger, Ruby Woo, and Heroine.

Lady Danger was the first one I got and I was immediately drawn to it because it was so bright and such a beautiful color. I got it in August but I didn’t wear it much, I’m not even sure why. After that, I got Full Fuchsia, Heroine, and Impassioned, and Ruby Woo and Teddy Velvet are my most recent purchases!

I just took a lot of nice pictures, bear with me.

I just took a lot of nice pictures, bear with me.

I used my camera instead of my phone for once, so I couldn’t resist the temptation to do a nice little photoshoot with the baes! (Yes, I did just call my lipstick the baes. Don’t judge me.)

IMG_0110

Taking pictures of swatches is hard, guys.

Because I know this is what you’re all here for, these are the swatches. From left to right: Velvet Teddy, Full Fuchsia, Impassioned, Lady Danger, Ruby Woo and Heroine.

Okay, okay, now I'm done.

Okay, okay, now I’m done.

Velvet Teddy, Lady Danger and Heroine are all matte finishes. Ruby Woo is a retro matte finish, and Full Fuchsia and Impassioned are both amplified finishes.

Honestly, I love them all like they were my children and I could probably buy ten more and still not have enough. Do you own any MAC lipsticks and if so, which ones? And if you don’t, which ones would you like to have?

30 days of lipstick: days six through ten

Hi again! Time for the second installment in my 30 days of lipstick series. I bet you’re all super excited!! I know I am. If you missed that post or you’re new around here, I’ll catch you up: a few weeks ago, I realized I have an abnormally large collection of lipstick, and in all my frantic lipstick buying, I had forgotten about products I haven’t worn in a while or even ones I’ve never worn, so I challenged myself to wear a different lipstick from those mentioned above every day for 30 days, and that brings us to this post! Let’s get right to it, shall we?

6

Day six: ColourPop Lippie Stix in LBB

First up in the post is this beauty from one of my ColourPop hauls. The ColourPop website describes this as a “rich plum wine with a matte finish.” I originally bought this because I wanted something that was a little out of my comfort zone, as I tend to stick with brighter shades and shy away from dark lipstick. I absolutely love it and I’m so glad I got it! It’s a little more plum than I thought it would be (I had pictured it as more of a dark red) but there is a beautiful dark red on ColourPop I might invest in next time I shop there!

7

Day seven: The Lip Bar in Purple Rain

This was one of those products I instantly fell for because of the packaging, but absolutely adored because of the product itself! I’d pictured it as a darker more Heroine-like purple, but it’s almost got a pastel quality to it that I absolutely love! I would wear this over and over again (and invest in more of their lipsticks as well) since it’s so nice and so soft! It’s creamy and goes on very smoothly. It came in my first ever BoxyCharm and boy am I glad it did. If you have a chance, definitely check out their site for some beautiful high quality colors!

8

Day eight: Little Mix by Collection in Leigh-Anne

I wore this for my internship and was absolutely impressed with it. I already really liked the Little Mix ones I wore last week so when I picked this up, I was really excited to try it! It stayed put all day, even through lunch and the six cups of water I drink every day. Plus the packaging is super cute and that always makes me happy.

9

Day nine: MAC lipstick in Impassioned

You might have seen this one (briefly) on my wish list post that went up the other day… oops? Turns out I already had this in my MAC arsenal, which just goes to show I should do an inventory of lipstick. This one was a gift (possibly Christmas or Valentine’s Day) from my ex-girlfriend and let’s just say that it’s exactly the kind of color I’m into so I’ll be keeping this one around! I mean, who gets rid of MAC lipstick because your ex-girlfriend gave it to you?

10

Day ten: Wet N Wild MegaLast Lip Color in Don’t Blink Pink

Everyone raves about the two dollar Wet N Wild lipsticks that apparently are wonderful so I gave in and bought two (I had another one I rarely wore which is going to be featured on here sooner or later). Needless to say, they didn’t disappoint! This one was beautifully bright and I loved it, I just wish I had exfoliated my lips before wearing! Definitely very matte and long lasting.

So that’s it for now! Do you own any of the lipsticks I wore the last five days?
