Quick impromptu hiatus

Hi everyone! I just wanted to pop in and say that I’ll be taking a hiatus from the blog for the next two or three weeks.

There’s a lot going on right now so between that and my schedule (AKA the lack of time to dedicate to the blog), I’ve decided that rather than half-ass posts, I’d prefer to wait until I have the time to sit down and write them as best as I can.

img_0125

I know, I’m bummed too.

I really do want to get more of a routine for my blog in the next few months, especially since I’ve (mostly) managed to keep up with my schedule for a couple of months now! I really need to schedule time to work on the blog but the problem is that I rarely ever seem to have time during the day to take photos, or when I have time to write, I’m tired and unmotivated.

Right now, I have a weird work week (when this post goes up, I’ll be working my bi-monthly weekend shift) and I’m going to Nashville this weekend for the first time (!!). The following weekend, I’m going to try and get a few posts written and scheduled, and the weekend after that I’ll be at Disney because it’s Dapper Day(s)!

I’m busy enough as it is, but I also have some stuff going on in my personal life and it’s keeping me distracted. I promise I’ll be back and working hard soon though! Thank you for understanding. <3

KL Polish: haul + review

Hi everyone! Today’s post is coming to you (almost) live for my office — during my lunch break, of course!

I lacked the energy to actually write this over the weekend as I usually do and thought I’d give myself a week off from beauty posts, but I have so many posts lined up that would never get up if I kept doing this so here we are.

At least I don’t have to worry about getting this done in time, because I’m a journalist and I work best under pressure.

So today’s post will be talking about KL Polish, the line of nail polish that KathleenLights released last fall. If you know me, you’ll know I love Kathleen and she’s my favorite youtuber, so I was really excited to get my hands on these!

IMG_0119

Kathleen released six different colors in December, and I ended up getting four of the six (the other two I don’t think I’d ever wear). The colors I got, pictured above from left to right: Snickerdoodle, Gumption, Brick Sidewalk and Zoey.

I’ve worn one of these for about a week each now so I can definitely say I’ve formed an opinion on the quality and let me tell you, I LOVE IT. Out of the four colors, Zoey is definitely my favorite, but formula-wise, it was the one I struggled with the most.

The packaging for these is beautiful and I absolutely love it. When I watched Kathleen’s video about this, she talked about the black matte packaging, which I definitely agree that it makes it easier to grip the bottle and it looks classier.

The formula for these is great as well, I love how it’s just thick enough to go on smoothly but it isn’t difficult to manage. It’s mostly opaque with one coat but I still prefer two or more, just because I’m a chip monster and no nail polish ever survives my chipping skills. I know one of the big things most people say about this is that it’s opaque with one coat but I would definitely say two is better.

The only issue I had with some of the colors is that it felt like the color on the tip of my nails wasn’t distributing evenly so it would look chipped really quickly but only at the tip. I’m not sure if I filed my nails weirdly then and it didn’t happen with every single application, but I did struggle with that (with Zoey). I also felt like Zoey was the color that was most difficult to work with and that chipped the fastest, especially compared to other colors.

Lastly, the brush on these is what makes them my favorite nail polishes, hands down. It’s wide but not bulky and just the right size to get more of your nail in one swipe, it distributes the polish evenly and it’s just so easy to use. I struggle with smaller brushes a lot, so I love these kinds of brushes and Kathleen definitely got it right there.

IMG_0120

Overall, I love these and they’re definitely great quality, especially for the price. I love Essie polishes and those are pricier than these and in my opinion, they’re about the same quality (maybe even lesser than KL Polish). These retail for $8.50 each, which is a pretty fair price point for the quality you get, if you ask me.

Along with that, these polishes are all vegan, cruelty free, and 5-, 7- and 9-free. If you’re like me and only had a vague idea of what 5-free meant, here’s a handy explanation from the website:

5-free nail polishes are free of 5 potentially harmful chemicals: formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, camphor, dibutyl phthalate, and toluene. 7-free nail polishes add xylene and ethyl tosylamide to that list, and 9-free polishes are also free of parabens and acetone. Didn’t expect a chemistry lesson, did you?

IMG_0121

Snicklerdoodle is described as “nude shade with a neutral undertone.” This is my least favorite color and I honestly don’t think I’d miss it, but I like it enough to keep it around for now.

IMG_0122

Gumption! is described as “vivid navy blue” and the description definitely fits. It looks so different in different lights, from really bright to really dark.

IMG_0123

Brick Sidewalk is described as a “deep, rusty” red, which can look more brown or more red depending on the light.

IMG_0124

Lastly, Zoey is just described as a “mauve shade,” which is exactly what it is and if you know me, you know I love mauve!

Have you ever tried KL Polish? Do you want to? Which colors do have or want?

Creepy Cute: March 2017 Boxycharm

Hi everyone! I’ll be honest, I haven’t exactly figured out what “Creepy Cute” means or why it’s our March theme, but it’s not a bad box so I’ll zip it. On that note, let’s move on to why you’re really all here.

IMG_0001

This month’s Boxycharm featured five full-size items (well, four and one travel-size), as it usually does, and while I’m not sure it’s the variation I was hoping for most, I’m pretty happy with the box overall!

IMG_0003

First up is this Naked Cosmetics Urban Rustic Trio eyeshadow, which is the most disappointing item in the box for me — I just don’t see myself wearing two out of three of those colors and it’d be a shame to use just one color and leave the other two to waste! That color is something I’m sure I can dupe easily enough, so this will be getting passed on to someone else.

IMG_0006

Next, we have a travel-size Smashbox Photo Finish primer, which I’m not entirely sure I’d use but I’d be willing to give it a shot before getting rid of it! We’ll see, because I’m not a huge fan of those silicone type primers (which at least I think this is).

Then we have a fan brush from the brand Crown Brush and listen… I don’t know who would ever use a brush that thick to highlight with. Seriously. The other fan brushes I have are comparatively much, much thinner! But I saw KathleenLights’ unboxing for this month and she said it would be good for contour, which I kind of had thought about when I saw it in the box, in which case, I’ll gladly use it!

IMG_0005

Lastly, we have the two things I was hoping for the most — the RealHer matte liquid lipstick and lip liner! I saw Kathleen get these in the same color in her box and I’ve been dying for them since, so needless to say, I’m very happy I got them!

IMG_0007

The shades are a beautiful deep berry and are right up my alley, so I’ll be trying these out ASAP to see how they feel on my lips! (And let’s just say, I hope I like them because a friend got another color in her box and I bought both lipstick and lip liner.)

Thanks for reading! What did you get in this month’s box?

Très Jolie: March 2017 ipsy

Hi everyone! I just very belatedly realized I never posted my February ipsy bag, so I’m very sorry about that — but I’m back with my March one! And hopefully I won’t miss any months in the future.

IMG_0104

Overall, I’d say this was a good month for ipsy. I love the bag itself, and that illustration is so beautiful! I love when ipsy sends bags that are different sizes from their usual, because I feel like I get more use for those more often than not!

IMG_0106

First up in this month’s bag is this Eva NYC Mane Magic 10-in-1 primer. I’ve tried some of their other products I’ve received through ipsy and Birchbox before, so I’m excited to give this one a shot! It’s always a relief when I get hair products that would actually come in handy with me.

Then we have the tarte tarteist lip paint in the color Rosé. I have not heard very good things about this lipstick, but I’m willing to give it a shot and see if my opinion differs from everyone else’s!

IMG_0107

Moving on — now we have the Beau Gâchis tapered blending brush, which seems a little scratchy but I’ll give it a shot, and the Chella eyebrow highlighter pencil in ivory lace. Both of these will be given a fair shot, we’ll see how they perform!

IMG_0108

Lastly, we have the INT Cosmetics pressed eyeshadow in the color Goddess Gold, which is totally up my alley and I can’t wait to give it a shot! I love filling up my empty palettes and I haven’t had to buy any yet, since I get so many through subscription boxes!

So that’s it for this month’s ipsy — what did you think? What did you get in yours?

Collective haul, or controlling the oil

Hi everyone! As I’m sure you’ve realized by the title, this post is a small collective haul from the weekend I was in Tampa. I’m a bit surprised at myself for not getting more, to be honest, but that may just be because I saved all my money for vintage shopping!

img_0105

Now that I don’t work in theme parks anymore, I’ve been trying to actively wear makeup more because I know I’m really bad at wearing makeup on a regular basis (aside from lipstick, of course) and I hate the thought of my makeup wasting away!

With that in mind, I picked up a couple of items to (hopefully) manage my oily skin a little bit better, which is the biggest deterrent in me wearing makeup every day. I can never get my makeup to last through the day and no primer, foundation or powder seems to control the oil!

img_0106

First up on this haul is the Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder. I heard about this through my best friend Kira’s blog a while ago and after seeing it at a Walgreens in Tampa, I had to grab it — I’ve never seen it in stores in Orlando! I’ve tried it a couple of times since then and I love the scent, but jury’s still out on its effectiveness. We’ll see!

img_0107

Then I picked up the Soap & Glory One Heck of a Blot Primer, which I’ve heard about a million times before and I’ve been dying to try! They’ve started carrying Soap & Glory more in stores here, so when I saw it at Target, I figured it was worth a shot! I also tried this once or twice but again, jury’s still out.

img_0108

Lastly, the most important step in an oily girl’s skincare routine — moisturize!! I only had a moisturized that didn’t have SPF in it and I’m not crazy about having to do moisturizer and then put sunscreen on top of my moisturizer, so I wanted to grab something I could use during the day that would have some SPF and this one seemed to do the trick. I’ve been using it for a couple of weeks now and aside from the fact that it takes a while to sink into my skin, I do like it a lot and will keep using it for a while.

Of course, I don’t need to remind anyone of how important it is to use SPF on your face, even during the winter, right? Everyone knows that you can get sunburnt even in the middle of winter and that UV rays aren’t stopped by the clouds? Okay, good. I knew you’re all smart cookies.

So that’s it for my little haul today! This isn’t the most exciting post I’ve had but there are a few more exciting posts lined up that you’ll get soon. Thanks for reading!

Review: ABH Modern Renaissance

Hi everyone! Sorry for the random blog vacation I took, I had a lot going on last last weekend (when I usually write my blog posts) and then on today (Sunday, as I’m writing this), I just couldn’t myself to write the blog post for then… so thus, mini vacation.

Today’s post is one I’m very excited to share with you, because I’ve been lusting after this palette for ages and after seeing a friend sell hers for $33 ish, I had to bite the bullet and get it! (I know I’ve said no more eye shadow for a while… hopefully now I’ll stick to it.)

img_0007

So yes, as I’m sure you’ve figured out by now, this post is about the Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance palette! I’m super late to the game here, since everyone and their mother has been talking about it for months now but at least I’m catching up, right?

img_0010

So let’s get into it! The Modern Renaissance palette has 14 shades, 10 of which are matte and four which are a shimmer/sheen finish. It’s predominantly warm tones, with a lot of pink/red/orange shades but a good amount of neutral and highlight shades.

In a nutshell, it’s my dream palette and I’m so obsessed with it, I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love it.

img_0012

Instead of trying to describe each color, I’m going to go ahead and quote Temptalia’s review of the palette because I’m sure I would start to sound like a broken record after the third color!

  • Tempera is a light beige with warm, peachy tones and a satiny sheen.
  • Golden Ochre is a muted, medium-dark yellow with strong, olive tones and a mostly matte finish.
  • Vermeer is a bright, light peachy with warm undertones and a frosted sheen.
  • Buon Fresco is a muted, medium purple-mauve with a matte finish.
  • Antique Bronze is a slightly muted, dark brown with warm, reddish undertones and a pearly sheen.
  • Love Letter is a muted, dark berry with subtle, cool undertones and a mostly matte finish.
  • Cyprus Umber is deep, taupe-brown with subtle, warmer undertones and a matte finish.
  • Raw Sienna is a light-medium brown with warm, golden undertones and a matte finish.
  • Burnt Orange is a slightly muted, medium orange-brown with warm undertones and a matte finish.
  • Primavera is a light-medium peachy-gold with warm undertones and a frosted, lightly metallic finish.
  • Red Ochre is a muted, medium-dark reddish-brown with warm undertones and a matte finish.
  • Venetian Red is a medium-dark red with subtle, warmer undertones and a mostly matte finish.
  • Warm Taupe is a medium, taupe-brown with warm undertones and a matte finish.
  • Realgar is a slightly muted, medium-dark orange-brown with warm undertones and a mostly matte finish.

img_0013

I’ve used the palette a couple and I’ve had somewhat mixed results. The first time I used it, I didn’t put on eyeshadow primer and I just had concealer/powder on my eyelid, and by the end of the day, there was no eye shadow left (which was a bummer, because I liked the look).

The second time, I made sure to use my Urban Decay Primer Potion and it stayed really well! I had a much better experience with it then, which I’m glad about because I was very disheartened the first time. I also used it yesterday, along with the Maybelline Color Tattoo in Bad to the Bronze and it stayed all night and was basically intact when I came home.

All in all, this is an amazing palette and I’m so glad I bought it. It’s super pigmented, it’s easy to blend and I experience very little fallout when doing my makeup — not to mention it’s got a good mix of mattes to sheens/shimmers. What else could I ask for?!

Review: Wet N Wild Liquid Catsuit Matte Lipstick

When it comes to drugstore brands, Wet N Wild have long been one of my favorite brands out there. I often find myself perusing the aisles of Walgreens in search of my next lipstick or product to try out, and considering my love for their matte tube lipsticks, when they came out with liquid lipsticks, I knew I needed to get my hands on them!

img_0001

Of course, in trying to pick three colors “I didn’t already have,” I picked three colors I have exact dupes for. The good news is this means I can go through my lipsticks and find some potential dupes these could work for. Would anyone be interested in reading something like that?

img_0003

The first color we have here is Nice to Fuchsia. Full disclaimer: I haven’t actually worn this one, and I just opened it to take this picture. I didn’t want to wear it in case I wanted to sell/trade this since I know I have at least one or two colors just like it!

img_0004

Next, we have Berry Recognize. I wore this one to work one day and I was very pleasantly surprised at how good the quality is! It’s very pigmented and you can easily get full opaqueness with just one or two light coats, it fully dries to matte, it barely transfers AND it’s very, very comfortable. It hits all the liquid lipstick checkmarks!

img_0005

Lastly, we have Give Me Mocha, which is a beautiful dark nude and would look amazing on deeper skin tones! Of course, I already have at least two lipsticks that look exactly like this, but I was very impressed with how it wore.

Overall, I’m really happy with these lipsticks and I’ll definitely be going to look for a few more colors! At this point in my life, I have almost every color of lipsticks I could wear, so I end up with a lot of really similar colors and then I wear the same ones every single week, so I know I need to mix it up. Maybe it’s time to bring back the 30 days of lipstick challenge I did when I first started my blog?

P.S. Sorry these pictures are so bad! I swear they looked better on my camera and to be honest… I’m too lazy to edit them.
