ColourPop Ultra Matte Lip: review and swatches

Hi guys! Today’s post is a review along with swatches of the ColourPop Ultra Matte liquid lipsticks. These were all the rage when they were released, and I was quick to get my hands on some to try them out.

I got three colors (Bumble, Tulle and Clueless) in a haul way back when but I decided to pass Clueless onto a friend since I wasn’t getting much use out of it since it’s very similar to one of my favorite liquid lipstick (the Sephora Lip Stain in Marvelous Mauve). The next color I got was Mars (if I’m not mistaken) and then More Better was the last one to join the ranks. Who knows which will be the next one to join my collection? Only time will tell…

JK. It’s totally going to be Lumiere 2. I need that baby right now.

ANYWAY! Moving on. Let’s get some swatches up in here, alright?

First, we’ve got Bumble on the left and Tulle on the right. Both of these are beautiful fall colors and there’s something about them that is just so unique! I loved wearing these last fall and I don’t regret them for one minute. Tulle actually looks a whole lot darker on my lips than on my hand but it makes for a great vampy color!

Then we’ve got Mars on the left and More Better on the right. I got Mars in a haul with quite a few other products, but More Better I was obsessed with as soon as I saw that it was being released and got it in a considerably smaller order along with the stuff I was sending Lucie for her care package!

Moving on… You’ve probably heard by now that people weren’t all too happy with the formula of the Ultra Matte Lip when it was first released. After hearing so many different people say that they weren’t fans of the formula, I did a lot of research and only got the colors that I knew people liked formula-wise, which is how I ended up with these.

By now, ColourPop has supposedly improved their liquid lipstick formula but I can’t attest to that since the last lipstick I got was back in October and I don’t know how much the formula has changed since, but the lipsticks that I have are definitely better than the reviews I heard when these were first launched.

They’re very liquid-y and don’t have a very pleasant smell, but it doesn’t linger so it’s honestly not even noticeable once you’re done applying. Once they dry, they dry to a full matte finish, which is great, but they’re not the most comfortable to wear on the lips. Not the most uncomfortable either, but they don’t compare to OFRA or Stila.

They look great and smooth (provided that you exfoliate your lips) but they’re not fully transfer proof, which means that they wear off more than some other matte lipsticks I’ve tried, and in the end, touching them up is a pain because they fade on the inside of your lips, but then crumble when you reapply to the point that you have to take them off completely and reapply it from scratch.

So what’s the verdict? If you don’t mind a drying formula that gets uncomfortable after a few hours, you’ll definitely like these, but they’re not the type of lipstick to wear out to dinner. If you’re going somewhere that you know you won’t eat or drink much though, these are perfect because they are very matte and they look great.

So I hope this was a useful review to read if you were on the fence about these and let me know if you have any and how you like them! Thanks for reading!

  1. Whenever I wear mine I always bring a perfectly posh skin stick with me because they’re all oil so it’s really useful in getting this formula off for reapplication and very gentle.

Also I’m glad I didn’t buy clueless in my recent lapse in judgement since it’s so close to marvelous mauve. Might be less expensive but I’d rather have the Sephora formula!!
